OMNIBUS for Direct Democracy in Germany
Lectures - Discussions - Films - Interviews, Water Plaza

The 'OMNIBUS for Direct Democracy', initiated by Joseph Beuys, is a white old Berlin Bus with a golden crown on it. The bus is a mobile artwork and the starting point for debates and thought-provoking impulses. It represents the idea of the Fluxus-group. The Fluxus movement stands for happenings which actively involve the public in a creative open-ended process.

One and a half year after the death of Beuys the first 'OMNIBUS for Direct Democracy in Germany' went on tour. Departing from the exhibition of "Documenta 8", it made its way through Germany, stopping at 700 stations. Conforming to Beuys’ ideal, its drivers were looking for the dialogue with people, in order to promote the active forming of the 'social sculpture'.

Aiming to bring about the unity between art and life, the 'OMNIBUS for Direct Democracy in Germany' is going on tour through South-eastern Europe where it will stop at each of the Goethe-Institutes in this region. The tour will take up to ten weeks, starting in the second week of September 2009 from Athens, and stopping also in Zagreb, Sarajevo, Belgrad, Bukarest, Sofia, Skopje, Istanbul and Thessaloniki.

At each stop, it will offer its visitors a platform for the fluctuation of thoughts as well as for talking, debating and other activities. By doing so, the bus will function as a panel for interaction between people and at the same time it will be the living metaphor for the concept of an ideal social system. Society becomes a social sculpture, in which anybody may live his or her creativity. According to Beuys, an ideal society, where justice and harmony with nature rule, can only be based on personal freedom and self-determination. In this sense, the journey to Greece will constitute a highlight of a deep symbolic power, as the bus will arrive at the origins of direct democracy as well as to the Athens Biennale whose theme is 'HEAVEN'.

18.00: The extended concept of art, social sculpture, and the issue of democracy for Joseph Beuys
"Art has in its development arrived at a point where it must raise the question about the structure of society. That means that art can no longer confine itself to its usual realm, but must rather see itself as a principle for the structure of society – as something which concerns everyone. Beuys called the search for this form of art ‘social sculpture’. A decisive component of this social sculpture is direct democracy. Another is a new economic order, which means self-managed enterprises, a new credit and price structure, and a state which shrinks itself down to size, to put it in the terms used by Joseph Beuys."
Johannes Stüttgen, Master student of Joseph Beuys and his closest associate, co-founder of the OMNIBUS

Arrival of OMNIBUS

Sunday 27 September 2009
20.30: André Guedes, Old Forms of Future Events - A Public Reading
Performance, Esplanade Building (Water Plaza, Faliro Olympic Complex)

A Public Reading is the chapter from an ongoing project by André Guedes called Old Forms of Future Events that will be presented as part of the exhibition World Question Center, curated by Chus Martínez.

The performance consists of the display of images and the reading of selected excerpts from the books "Troy and the Trojans" and "The Italian Urbanism Since the Post-war Till Today" written by the American archaeologist Carl W. Blegen and the Italian urbanist and historian Marcello Fabbri respectively.

The two autonomous studies, which have the city as a common subject, will be juxtaposed during the performance, merged into each other and rehearsed in order to dissolve into a same narrative. While three people re-enact these excerpts, a fourth person performs an improvised sound score, autonomous from the textual reading and the pictorial display.

The overlapping of these two literary sources aims to reflect on the idea of erosion, transformation and disappearance, as well as on a social and physical entropy that derives from the cyclic process by which cities – and life within them – come across in history; something in which we inevitably participate but are at the same time subjected, either individually or as a group.

The production of this work was possible with the institutional support of Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation and Direcçao Geral das Artes / Portuguese Ministery of Culture.

21.30: Sigmatropic, Τasman, Katerina Undo
Concert, Water Plaza

Sigmatropic: Almost a year after their last concert, Sigmatropic return to live action with a new lineup. The band’s current phase shows a shift to a more intimate sound, with acoustic timbres that tie up to their loops and electronics and with electricity to mark their outbursts. In their forthcoming show on Saturday September 26th, under the auspices of the 2nd Athens Biennale 2009, Sigmatropic will be showcasing versions from their latest album Dark Outside (2007) and EP Ours at Least (2007), together with numbers from their previous releases Random Walk (1998) and Sixteen Haiku and Other Stories (2003), and also hints from their upcoming work and a few covers.
Sigmatropic are: Akis Boyatzis: main vocals, bass, samples/programming | Ioannis Tryferoulis: drums | Theodore Pistiolas: acoustic guitar, piano, Theremin | Panos Lapousis: keyboards | Foivos Zitis: electric guitar

Τasman: Tasman (Tasos Papastamou) was born in 1974 in Athens and was raised by a musical family. He studied the violin and at the age of 19 he became a member of the ERT National Symphony Orchestra until 2003. His musical influences, however, are not only classical; in 1994 he began exploring the sounds of the electric violin and soon he became a member of "Closer". Their long-term collaboration leaded to several albums and live performances, including a tour in England and appearances in Synch and Rockwave festivals, next to major names of the greek and international alternative music scene. Their collaboration lasted until 2007. Alongside he collaborated with many greek artists and toured the world, participating in key festivals, such as the International Jazz Festival of Montreal with Kristie Stasinopoulou. In 2007 he began his solo course. He composed the music to Chloe Matzari's short film "The Wall" and later collaborated with Sofia Spyratou's dance theatre "Roes", undertaking the music production in her shows. In parallel, he recorded his first personal album titled "Solace", released in the autumn of 2009 by Undo Records/EMI. In "Solace", Tasman's violins and mandolins are escorted by break beat and distorted loops, Sofia Papazoglou sings in dub soundcolors and Alkinoos Ioannidis dresses with his voice the most 'hardcore' track of the album. In the 2nd Athens Biennale 2009 Tasman presents part of his solo works and improvises on his electric violin and mandolin, crating melodious, otherwordly but also noisy soundscapes.

Katerina Undo/ "Dive into ritual noise": Experimental optical-visual performance with Theremin. The performance focuses on the sound effect of the interfered space between transmitter and receptor, in the intensity this contact creates.

21.00: Elizabeth Ward, Christos Michas & Giorgos Papadopoulos,Money: need, desire, utopia
Performative Lecture, Esplanade Building (Water Plaza, Faliro Olympic Complex)

As part of the "How Many Angels Can Dance on the Head of a Pin?" exhibition curated by Christopher Marinos.

"The starting point of our intervention is the realization, even the complaint, that the economic discourse is becoming increasingly autonomous and is superimposing itself upon the other spheres of life.  This process of economisation is following different trajectories: globalisation and imperialism, commodification and alienation, rationalisation and bureaucratisation are only a few of the lines of expansion of the economic logic.  Our aim is to investigate and subvert the economic grant narrative of the market economy by focusing on the function of money, to analyze the specific nature of the libidinal investments in the economic and consequently in the political sphere, and thereby to show how the individual desire is articulated, represented and mediated by the economic discourse. Moreover, to suggest a subversive potentially revolutionary re-investment of desire that will open the possibility for full enjoyment.

Competition, we will argue, is the imperative of the market economy legitimized by evolutionary, economic and moralistic arguments and money is the instrument that constructs meaning in this context. Money, regulates desire and constitutes subjectivity in consumption and production, it is the master signifier of the capitalist symbolic order and the omnipotent ritual of initiation in the economic 'reality'.  The grip of this reality does not happen in the discursive or even the ideological level, it is primarily affective and libidinal.  Discourse and language is just the screen upon which the tragedy of the alienation of desire in the market is performed, a projection and an articulation of a deep-seated reality.  Nevertheless, alienation is not an ideological problem; it is a pre-condition of subjectivation. Rational argument or rational critique is not a solution to the problem of alienation, but the fundamental misrecognition of what is necessary or possible for existence.  We will rather try to use both the body and the speech, the psyche and the intellect to suggest the construction of a subjectivity of happiness and a liberating alienation.

Our intervention needs to address both the discursive and the affective control of economic reality and of money.  We will suggest the connection of money to need and to desire and we will reflect on the possibility of utopia. Word, image and bodily movement; narrative structure, theoretical analysis and contemporary dance will be our media employed in an effort to illuminate and disrupt the separation from and the alienation of desire in the market via money.  The tension that lies in the basis of subjectivity can and should not be articulated as an economic and a monetary problem. This solution, delegated by market ideology, is, as any, bound to fail.  We will rather try to prefigure the utopia of full enjoyment as a strategy of resistance against the market and its imperative of competition as well as against the state of emergency imposed by the administrators of the economic crisis."

Elizabeth Ward is a dancer and choreographer based in New York.  She also teaches ballet in the Dance Academy of Stockholm and in Tanzquartier Wien. Her aesthetics combine classical ballet with postmodern dance and punk music.

Christos Michas's work engages with sound and image. He has studied and worked in Amsterdam, London and Athens, where he has also established his production company “game one productions”.

Giorgos Papadopoulos is an economist, graduate of London School of Economics. He attempts to combine economy critique with psychoanalysis and political action. He is a researcher in Jan Van Eyck academy and PhD candidate in Erasmus University of Rotterdam.

21.00: Errands, The futuristic houses of Nikolaos Xasteros
Presentation, Flisvos Park (next to the Flisvos Building)

The Errands present a dwelling in the form of a flying saucer, designed by Nikolaos Xasteros and patented in September 1969. The dwelling is a pre-fabricated house, constructed from a material that was novel for the time: fiberglass.

Xasteros envisioned a residence that could be easily assembled and offer the potential of low cost living. He established a factory for the production of these futuristic houses in the town of Komotini in northern Greece. Due to the large number of interested buyers, Xasteros started preparing the first exhibit of the dwelling in 1977. The plan was canceled almost instantaneously, when Konstantinos Karamanlis, the Prime Minister of Greece at the time, introduced a law banning the placement of pre-fabricated edifices in plots of land that were less than 1 acre.

The futuristic houses produced at the factory were no more than 10 and one may still encounter them throughout Greece, revealing fragmentarily their history. The chronicle of futuristic residences, as developed by significant architects worldwide, place Nikolaos Xasteros’s constructions in an important place in greek and international architecture, since they are thought to reveal at the same time a global vision that concerned the evolution of technology, mass production and the resolution of housing issues.

The presentation of Nikolaos Xasteros’s work includes drawings, photographs and testimonies, but also one of his futuristic houses, which has been transferred to the Flisvos Park by the Errands, as part of the "Heaven_Live" exhibition.

For his lecture Angelidakis will focus on the core of his practice and namely on the architecture of presentation and communication and will present his most recent projects up to the architectural design of the 2nd Athens Biennale 2009.

20.30: Toys in Heaven
Event, Water Plaza
Curated by ERROR CODE and HERACLES

Error Code and Heracles present a programme dedicated to music through the use of children's toys and unfold the possibilities they hold. The event is part of the exhibition "How Many Angels can Dance on the Head of a Pin?", curated by Christopher Marinos.

Many people see heaven in children and in their magical world, full of toys, that all of us as children have touched and basically broke. Everyone remembers this feeling of overwelming wonder that comes along with every new present, with every new toy: what's hidden inside it? What is this generating  power that makes the doll talk, the piano to make music, the model car to move?

What do children look for in their toys? Why is there this innate need to strip down the exterior and to explore the inside? Even if this process often leads to the total destruction of toys, sometimes something surprising and magical comes up: a doll that talks backwards, a sound that we never heard before, a shine that all of a sudden lights up the space. At this precies moment, abuse (of the toy in this case) redefines its traits.

We will produce sound out of gameboys, casio, old toys long forgotten in the attic or scattered in the open air market and their remains will be reconstructed and re-programmed for the creation of various compositions and improvisations.

Hip-Hop festival, Water Plaza

Fourteen of the most popular hip hop groups of Athens join their forces with the Greek Council for Refugees N.G.O. (GCR) against racism and xenophobia. The Greek Council for Refugees was funded in 1989 and is an exclusively philanthropic organisation. Its vision is for every refugee and asylum-seeker in Greece to have access to a life of dignity and its mission is to protect their rights and help them live without fear.

The participating artists on the second day of the festival are: Univers, Nekriki Sighi, Freedom of Speech, Bitman & El Pap Chico, Flowjob, MC Yinka and guest Nikolas Razastarr.

This concert has a dual purpose; on one hand, to make young people more conscious of the necessity to protect and respect refugees through the dissemination of the message “life is a right, its protection is an obligation”, and on the other hand, to financially support the Greek Council for Refugees and enable them to carry on their diverse work. The Greek Council for Refugees collects funds from European and national programmes, sponsorships, donations, members’ contributions and from special events. Accurate information and the raising of awareness is crucial for wiping out social racism. Such actions and initiatives aim at making the world a better place and contribute to the process of approaching and accepting our fellow-man, no matter where he or she comes from.

11.00-15.00: An Architektur, Towards Post-Capitalist Spaces: The Meaning of the Commons
Open Workshop with Massimo de Angelis, Stavros Stavrides and other guests from Athens, Flisvos Building

The notion of private property is crucial to capitalism. For the last 30 years the neoliberal agenda helped to transform the urban landscape into a field of commodities dominated by the claims of capitalist utilization: Its perpetual need to find further profitable terrains for capital accumulation resulted in the commodification and privatization of former public properties, services and spaces that had long been considered inaccessible vis-à-vis profitability calculations. These politics of dispossession, disfranchisement and exclusion led to increasing spatial and social inequalities.  The current crisis, however, has meanwhile led to a decreasing legitimation of these neoliberal politics. Yet the left seems to be lacking concepts to make use of the material and imaginary spaces that are opened up by the current situation: How to further resist and challenge the capitalist demands on the production of space? How to develop alternative models of urbanization and society?

We want to discuss the potential of the concept of commons as a political discourse and practice that sets a limit to capitalist accumulation but that also goes beyond it,  a strategy of de-commodification and re-appropriation that tries to recognize and articulate the already existing though maybe minor and often micro-level alternative practices. Commons are an optimistic alternative, a grounded vision based on existing struggles but fundamentally questioning the hegemonic logic of a capitalist society. We want to discuss the notion of commons in different historical situations and explore how it can be actualized today. What are its potentials, limitations, can it be turned into a social and political force and perspective towards post-capitalist spaces?

Massimo de Angelis is Professor of Political Economy at the University of East London.
Stavros Stavrides is Assistant Professor of Architecture, National Technical University of Athens.
